How does techtronic work in my 2011 sonata?

i have the 2011 sonata and it has no clutch but has a shifter with just plus or minus. You just push the stick to the lift from drive gear. Do i have to shift or can i just put it in that mode and drive it like an automatic and is it more fuel efficient. How do i use it. Thanks.
