Why do Americans seem to care more about a guy's (Wiener) personal life, than their own life?

Right now the US government is actively supporting governments like the ones in Saudi and Bahrain that are killing protesters while at the same time condemning Iran. The US was supporting Mubarak and Saleh and only embraced their rebellions after they lost power but supported their tyranny for 30+ years prior. The US is has been manipulating Arab governments for 100 years and it’s getting worse and worse and it’s causing terror attacks that will kill Americans. It could kill you or your family. But instead of people getting mad at the government for causing a situation that may possibly end in their death by terror attack, the people are concerned with a man’s private photos which are none of their business. What’s the rational for this?
