Average cost to replace entire clutch assembly on '99 VW Beetle?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me an average cost to replace an entire clutch assembly on a 1999 VW Beetle. I was quoted $975.00 + tax for the whole job from my regular mechanic. That price breaks down to 6 hours @ $70.00 an hour = $480.00 + $500.00 for the whole clutch assembly (5 different parts). I've used this mechanic for years and always felt he was fair, but I just bought a used Beetle, the clutch went the day after I paid for it, and now I'm questioning such a high cost for this repair.
